The principles of honesty, discretion, professional boundaries and respect that should shape responsible spiritual counsel.

I believe that offering spiritual guidance is a responsibility that must never be treated lightly. When someone approaches me with a personal concern, they may be sharing something they have not felt able to discuss elsewhere. They may be searching for clarity, trying to understand an experience or facing a decision that carries significant emotional weight. In such circumstances, the person offering guidance must recognise the trust being placed in them. Spiritual knowledge, experience and conviction should always be accompanied by honesty, discretion and respect.

I consider the ability to listen without judgement one of the foundations of responsible counsel. A person should be able to explain their concerns without being humiliated, pressured into accepting an interpretation or made to feel inferior because of their doubts. Listening carefully means allowing someone to speak, asking appropriate questions and considering the circumstances before offering an opinion. It also means recognising that we may not have all the answers. I believe an adviser demonstrates maturity not by claiming to know everything, but by being honest about the limits of their knowledge.

Impartiality is equally important. Spiritual guidance should not become an opportunity to impose personal preferences, control relationships or influence decisions for the adviser’s own benefit. People come from different backgrounds and hold different values, responsibilities and aspirations. My role, as I understand it, is to offer considered guidance within my area of knowledge while respecting each person’s right to decide how to proceed. Advice should help individuals think more clearly, not replace their judgement with someone else’s authority.

I also believe that sound spiritual counsel requires a genuine foundation of knowledge and experience. Confidence alone does not establish competence. A responsible adviser should be able to explain the basis of their reasoning, acknowledge uncertainty and avoid presenting speculation as established fact. They should recognise the limits of spiritual guidance and understand when a concern would be better addressed by a doctor, psychologist, solicitor or another appropriately qualified professional. Spiritual counsel cannot responsibly promise to replace every other form of assistance.

Discretion and boundaries are just as essential. Personal information should be handled with care, and a person’s vulnerability must never be treated as an opportunity for exploitation. Fees, where applicable, should be communicated clearly and agreed upon without coercion. No individual should be pressured to purchase repeated consultations, make escalating payments or accept additional services through fear. I believe that a professional relationship must remain transparent, respectful and free from emotional manipulation.

For those seeking guidance, I recommend taking time to assess the person you are considering consulting. Notice whether they listen carefully, explain their reasoning, respect disagreement and allow you to make decisions freely. Ask about their experience, approach and fees. Be cautious of anyone who claims absolute authority over your life or discourages you from seeking independent advice. A polished presentation is not enough; character, conduct and sound judgement matter far more.

A spiritual reflection

My advice is to seek guidance that strengthens your understanding rather than diminishes your independence. A responsible spiritual adviser should help you become more conscious of your choices, more honest with yourself and better equipped to face your circumstances. Trust should be built through conduct, not demanded through fear. Spiritual guidance is most meaningful when knowledge is accompanied by integrity and compassion by responsibility.
